Music Department

The Ustach Middle School award-winning music department offers several programs for students.

Orchestra, band, jazz band, choir, color guard, and drum line are available for both beginner and advanced students.

Band and Orchestra are year long classes for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Students will: learn the basics of being in a group ensemble, read sheet music, practice, and perform in several events throughout the school year.

Band instruments may include: flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, trumpet, F horn, trombone, baritone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion Orchestral instruments may include: violin, viola, cello and string bass.

Choir is a year long class for 7th and 8th graders. Students will learn: fundamental aspects of being in a choir. Students may also have a say in the music that will be learned and sung. There are several performances during the school year.

Color guard is an after school indoor activity performed during the winter or spring, where the guard performs unaccompanied by the band to a piece of prerecorded music. Students will learn: choreography, how to use various equipment (including flags and simulated rifles), and dance. They perform using their facial expressions and connections to the audience and dancing to enhance the meaning and feeling of their show. There are several competitions attended during the school year.

Drumline is an after school activity performed throughout the school year. Students will learn: fundamentals of percussion instruments, marching, and choreography. There are several performances and competitions attended throughout the school year.

All groups may perform at more district/school functions as they become known.

Practice time: All students are encouraged to practice daily. We realize many students are involved with other activities and finding time may be difficult. With the belief that academics should be the first priority, we recommend students try to treat this “class” like others and set aside some time for “homework”. This could be 10 minutes a day, 30 minutes every other day or as much as fits in to their schedule. Ten minutes may not seem like it would make a difference, but it is amazing what can be accomplished in so little time.

All students are expected to attend all performances for their group(except Music in the Parks and Disneyland). Notification in writing needs to be given as soon as a conflict is known for any performance, but at least two weeks in advance to be excused and be given an alternative assignment. Excused absence from school will be given an alternative assignment.

Students are expected to wear black bottoms (slacks for gentlemen/long skirts or slacks for ladies), tuxedo shirts (available for purchase through the band), and teal bow tie (available for purchase through the band), black socks/tights/nylons, and black dress shoes.
